If you are on a weight loss journey and have hit a weight loss plateau, you have come to the right place! Check out these tips to see how I lost over 100 lbs.
First off, what is a plateau? A weight loss plateau is when you have lost weight successfully and then you get into the daunting period where the weight loss stops. And the dreaded scale stares back at you with the devilish chuckle, and you stand there in despair wondering where you went wrong and why the numbers are not changing. Yes, we all go through this at one point or another, and you might already be here now, which is why you are reading this. Let me be clear, yes you can overcome this, and yes you can start losing weight again.
Below, see the three powerful steps that helped me get through a weight loss plateau as I lost 100 lbs:
- Switch Up Your Workout Routine: Routines Suck
- Switch Up Your Diet/Eating Habits: Because, We All Love Carbs!
- Being Gentle With Yourself: It Is The Right Thing To Do!
First you must understand our body is extremely adaptive to routine and the best way to break this plateau is through mixing things up. For example, if you are a cardio junky like me, you can shift your workout routine by switching from cardio to weight training. You can expect to get results on the scale to change within a week or two. This is an effective method because it switches gears and changes your metabolism and gives it a boost by not sticking to a routine that your body has adapted to.
The second super effective method to break a plateau is through your diet. If you follow these low-carbohydrate diets religiously and have hit a plateau, try carb cycling. Carb cycling is when you alternate days when you have low carb days and days when you can freely eat carbs. Even though you are eating super healthy, that will not help when you have hit a plateau – try switching things up with your diet through carb cycling.
The third and last method that worked for me during my plateau is being compassionate and gentle with myself throughout my weight loss journey. Understanding that weight loss isn’t linear is important. Your mindset is actually the major tool in weight loss and goal setting. We are our worst critic and sometimes all we need is a break and to realize it is completely okay to have weeks or months without dramatic weight loss. Learn to listen to your body and respond accordingly.
To overcome a weight loss plateau, switch up your workouts and consume various healthy foods to speed up the process. The trick to overcome a plateau is to change the routine and have fun with it. Accept it when you get discouraged but don’t use that as an excuse to give up! The scale can be an important tool to measure progress, but it can also lead to low self-esteem and disappointment – like when you’ve hit a plateau. Changing things up helps your body break out of the adaptive state and increases your chances of getting that scale to budge.
